Do Your Part For Planet Earth

by Kris Janowich

Everyone loves keeping cool with air conditioning in the summer but everyone also hates the unavoidable electric bill that follows. Everyone uses electricity these days and as energy prices constantly change the price of electricity is also uncertain. However there is an alternative to using electricity provided by your local power company. Solar power is catching on with many people and DIY kits are available for your home.

What these kits will contain are the necessary pieces you will need to install solar power. This will include instructions, washers, bolts, nuts and the solar panels. In other words, a basic starter kit that does not include the pieces for a battery station is what you will have. If you want battery storage, these are sold separately. Sometime you can find a dealer who has complete packages; it is rare but not unheard of.

Solar power used to be a thing of science fiction and when it was invented it was not practical. These units where cumbersome and delicate to say the least. Not to mention ungodly expensive. But as time passed and interest increased the units evolved. They are extremely small and durable now. So small that outdoor lights and lamps can be powered by them.

A solar power system used for businesses and homes is powered by the photoelectric effect. This process allows energy from the sun to be converted into electricity through the solar panel. These are the basic solar panel cells that you may notice on homes and offices. Solar panels are also used on the space station and various satellites; however, these are very technologically advanced models. Over the years NASA has replaced aging cells that were unstable with more durable units.

The idea is you cover your roof with these panels and the resulting light from the sun gets converted into electricity for you to use. You can power your whole house with this method and many people are going off the power grids and creating their own energy. The panels made for use on buildings and homes are very durable, and very weather resistant. They are designed to last for twenty years or more. Plus the electricity they provide is completely renewable and clean.

The only drawback is the times when the sun is not available, such as during a storm or late in the evening, for these times you will need a battery station. A battery station is typically installed inside the home in the attic or basement and will store large amounts of energy while the sun is shining. After the sun goes down or is covered with clouds the batteries then kick in to supply your electricity. How much electricity you can use depends on your battery station.

Solar power is becoming more popular every day. As our dependency on oil is proving to be unsafe and unreliable many people are exploring other options. Many are embracing the idea of solar farms for their towns and cities. This is a very powerful source of electricity. The earth receives enough of it that we could power the entire world with it and the plants wouldn’t be everywhere.

For all intents and purposes, solar power seems to be the way to go for future generations. Nevertheless, there are some who do not see it this way. These are the people who profit from coal and oil production. It is a sad day when profits and greed are more important than a society.
