Solar Homes and Building Permits

Lets take a look at the permit process for your solar home. Not every community welcomes solar power systems. That’s because they dont understand them or the advantages to the community. Fortunatly other people have already gone through the permit process, amybe not in your area but elsewhere. You’re not the first. An experienced supplier and/or solar contractor can take care of the permit hassle and help cut through the red tape.

Start by calling the local building department to find out who has jurisdiction and if anybody has solar power system experience. Briefly describe your system and ask about appplicable code. You’ll probably be reffered to an electrical inspector because solar power systems are electrical.

Some of the issues you may face in getting a permit include:

- Exceeding roof load
- Improper wiring
- Obstructing side yards and setbacks
- Erecting unlawful PV frames
- Installing components to close to streets

Knowing what the permit process is can help you decide how much you can tackle yourself and how much you should or must have done professionally. In addition, local building permit departments may be able to tell you which local contractors have solar experience.

  1. Actually I have started with my HOA first before I look at the permit process. If my HOA doesn’t approve it then I either fight it or forget my solar project.
