What is a solar community?

Solar communities are planned developments across the nation that require or encourage solar construction. They may include passive solar designs as well as solar power systems. A passive solar home, is one that utilizes part of the building as a solar collector, as opposed to active solar, such as PV or domestic hot water systems. However, a passive solar home that also uses solar electricity is called passive-active.

The concept of solar communities is more than a decade old and there are a few such communities that continue to depend on solar energy. In addition, more communities are making it easier for solar home construction by offering local seminars, training building inspectors and even offering special incentives and rebates to help people see the light. The future will undoubtedly offer additional solar communities.

Buying a solar home can dramatically cut energy costs. Lennar Homes is building a brand new solar community in California as we speak.
